Micro-mesh, and why pine needles are the real test

Anything with a hole smaller than a leaf stops a leaf, which is why every family markets against leaves. Needles are the test, because a needle is a needle. It threads through a slotted screen end-on, settles into a foam pore and drops between brush bristles. Only a woven mesh with an aperture narrower than the needle refuses it — which is why micro-mesh became the premium default, and the honest reason a conifer lot pays more.

The trade is blinding. Independent evidence is thin: the closest is Tim Carter, a builder who tested guards on his own New Hampshire house, published the results at AskTheBuilder, and settled on stainless mesh. One roof, not a laboratory, but first-hand.

Reverse-curve: a bet on surface tension

A reverse-curve hood is a solid cover with a rounded nose. Water leaving the roof clings to the curve, wraps around it and drops into a slot behind, while leaves carry on over the edge and fall. On a shallow roof shedding whole leaves, it works.

It loses two ways. Volume: water coming fast off a steep plane meets the nose too quickly to stay attached, so it leaves the curve and overshoots entirely, during the storm the gutter exists for. Fouling: surface tension depends on that nose staying clean, and a reissued US patent for a self-cleaning gutter shield describes earlier reverse-curve designs losing "their surface tension feature as pollen, oil, scum, eventually adhere to them." That is a competitor's patent describing rivals, so read it as an interested party — the mechanism is still testable from a ladder in a rainstorm.

Servicing a hood, either way, means removing it. And the quantified overshoot claims in circulation trace to competing manufacturers rather than any published test: real mechanism, advertising percentages.

Screens, foam and brush: the cheap end

Perforated screens are the cheapest thing that does anything: they stop leaves and twigs and pass needles, seeds and grit, which compost quietly in the trough. Honest product for one deciduous tree and an easy ladder set.

Foam inserts and brush guards sell on being effortless — cut to length, push in, done. Both then hold debris rather than shed it, and cleaning either means lifting it out: the job you were avoiding.

Are gutter guards worth it? Read the maker's own warranty

Guards reduce how often gutters need cleaning, sometimes dramatically. They do not eliminate it, and anything sold on never cleaning your gutters again is overselling — provably so, from the makers.

Gutterglove's install guide for its retail micro-mesh kit tells owners to inspect for debris that has not blown off, "particularly where two sections of your roof come together (valley) or in areas that are protected from wind," and to brush it away — with a brush the company sells on a pole. Its warranty is blunter: "It is the owner'(s) responsibility to unclog the mesh in the event it gets clogged."

Read that warranty, because the headline number is doing work. It runs 25 years for parts only, not labor, and is non-transferable. "In coastal areas, warranty is reduced to 5 (five) years for parts only," coastal being within five miles of the coast. Coverage is void for improper installation, hail, windstorm, moss accumulation, tree sap on the mesh, and where "maintenance procedures are not followed properly."

Same frame for gutter guard reviews: the one widely cited independent magazine test dates to 2010, and every version we could reach was quoted secondhand by firms selling the winners. Treat ranked lists as advertising until you find the protocol. On cost, a screen is a few dollars a foot and a branded system can exceed the gutters under it — the pricing breakdown holds the ranges.

The part nobody sells: what goes under your shingles

Plenty of systems, hoods especially, are installed by lifting the first course of shingles and sliding a flange underneath. That is not neutral at that course, which is the one resisting wind uplift, held down by a heat-activated adhesive strip. GAF's shingle warranty states the constraint: self-sealing shingles "must be exposed to warm, sunny conditions for several days before they completely seal," and those installed in fall or winter "may not seal until the following spring." Breaking that bond in October has a price, paid in the next windstorm rather than on install day.

Gutterglove's guide tells installers to "check to see if your roofing material is adhered to your underlayment. Do not pry up your shingles or tear your underlayment," and gives a panel to avoiding an install where "the shingle on the roof is being impacted." A propped shingle gives wind a purchase, over the drip edge whose entire job is that edge.

On the warranty rumor, we read three current documents rather than repeat it:

  • GAF's shingle and accessory limited warranty never mentions gutters, covers or aftermarket attachments. It goes the other way — "this limited warranty remains in effect" even where products "were not properly installed" — while covering only inherent manufacturing defects.
  • CertainTeed's residential shingle warranty excludes "Damage caused by structural changes, alterations or additions, or by the installation of equipment (such as, but not limited to, aerials, signs or air-conditioning equipment) to the building after the original shingles have been applied." Guards go unnamed; the clause reaches them anyway.
  • Owens Corning's roofing system warranty lists "equipment installation" among post-application alterations whose damage it will not cover, and separately excludes "improperly designed or installed gutter or downspout systems."

None says a guard voids your shingle warranty. All three say something narrower: damage caused by what you bolted on afterwards is not the shingle maker's problem. The document that bites is your roofer's workmanship warranty, which often forbids other trades on the roof. Ask for that before the guard crew arrives.

Ice and snow behave differently by type

Ice dams are a heat-loss failure and the ice dam post has the mechanism; guards neither cause them nor cure them. What changes by family is what happens once ice is there.

Micro-mesh iced over stops being a filter and becomes a roof, so meltwater runs across it and off the front. The maker says so: "Icicles can form, and ice can form on top of Gutter Guard by Gutterglove in extreme cold weather where snow is present." Reverse-curve hoods are solid, so ice bridges the intake slot and clearing it means taking the hood off in January. Screens are easiest to clear and first to be torn off by sliding snow. Foam and brush hold water, which is another way of saying they hold ice.

Who is standing at your roof edge in Texas

Gutter guard is usually sold and fitted by a company that is not your roofer, by people whose work nonetheless touches your shingles. If a lifted course leaks two winters later, whether anyone is answerable turns on what credential the installer holds, and whether the state issues one at all.

The pattern is narrower than the rumor: damage caused by what you added later is not the shingle maker's problem. The document more likely to bite is your roofer's workmanship warranty, which is a separate piece of paper.

Do gutter guards cause ice dams?

They do not cause them and they do not cure them. An ice dam is a heat-loss failure, so warm air escaping through the ceiling melts snow above the eave and it refreezes over the cold overhang, and work at the gutter line does not touch that cause. What the guard type changes is behavior once ice is present.
