
Most attics are not short of exhaust. They are short of intake. Nearly every ventilation complaint we get has already had more exhaust added to it at least once, which is a bit like fixing a blocked straw by widening the top.
Air has to get in before any of it can get out. Everything below follows from that.
The exhaust vents, and what each one is

The one line worth memorizing: pick one exhaust type per attic space. Two types on the same space do not add up. They feed each other, as the gable section below explains.
What a ridge vent is, and why it works
A ridge vent is a continuous vent running along the peak. The installer cuts a slot through the sheathing on each side of the ridge board — commonly around an inch per side, per the manufacturer's own instruction — fits a baffled vent section over it, and caps the whole run with ridge shingles. From the street it reads as a slightly fat peak.
Two things drive it. Hot air rises to the highest point of the attic and leaves, and wind passing over the ridge creates a low-pressure zone that pulls more out. The external baffle on the front edge creates that second effect and keeps driven rain out. It is not decoration.
Three ways it gets built wrong, all of them common:
- The slot never gets cut, or gets cut only through the shingles. The vent is then a decorative ridge cap. This is not rare.
- The run stops short of both ends. Every foot skipped is capacity gone, and the rated length and the working length quietly become different numbers.
- The slot is cut too wide, on the theory that a bigger hole moves more air. It does not: NFA is fixed by the vent, not the slot, and an oversized slot only brings raw deck edge near the vent's own openings, where wind-driven rain will find it.
The intake vents, and the unit they are measured in
Vents are rated in net free area — the genuinely open square inches left after the screen, louvers and baffle take their share. The gross opening is always bigger, and NFA is the only figure that counts toward code.
Intake comes in four shapes, and most people only picture the first:
- Continuous soffit strip. Vented panel running the length of the eave. The default on any house with a real overhang, and the panel you choose changes the number enormously — that is the subject of what a soffit is.
- Individual undereave vents. Rectangular plates set into a solid soffit every few bays. Perfectly good, if there are enough of them and somebody cut the framing behind them.
- Vented drip edge, or an over-fascia vent. Intake right at the roof edge, for houses with a narrow overhang or none at all.
- Roof-deck intake vent. A low-profile vent worked into the first course or two of shingles, doing the same job where the eave cannot be opened up.
Then there is the number nobody measures: installed NFA. Published NFA assumes the vent is open, and in an occupied house it frequently is not — blown insulation slumped over the top plate and lying on the soffit vents, missing baffles that would have stopped it, or a perforated panel fitted across solid blocking with no hole cut behind it. All three pass an inspection carried out from the driveway.
We have opened attics where the published intake was generous and the installed intake was close to zero. The roof above it aged like a roof ten years older, which is the mechanism behind the ventilation gap in service life rather than a separate problem.
What the code says, and what is only trade practice
Code, and where the sums live. IRC R806.2 fixes how much net free ventilating area an attic needs — 1/150 of the space being vented, halved to 1/300 only where a house satisfies both halves of the exception, never just one. That is a ratio and a division problem, worked end to end in the attic ventilation calculator. The half that changes what you buy is the placement condition, which caps how much of the total may sit near the ridge: the code has an opinion about where vents go, not only how many.
Two neighboring sections govern the hardware, and they are the ones installers break. R806.1 asks for cross ventilation of every enclosed space, through openings protected against rain and snow, and screens anything whose least dimension exceeds 1/4 inch — which is why a vent's rating is always smaller than its hole. R806.3 requires a clear inch between insulation and sheathing at the vent: what the baffles are for, and what nobody rechecks after the insulation crew.
Note what the 1/300 route rewards: not more exhaust, but balance.
Trade rule of thumb, not code: split the net free area 50/50 between intake and exhaust, and where you cannot, err toward intake — the 60/40 version of the same advice. It sits just under the code band on purpose. When exhaust exceeds intake, the surplus does not idle politely: the excess exhaust vents start acting as intake to make up the shortfall, so a ridge vent ends up drawing air in at one end and pushing it out at the other, or drawing it from the house through the ceiling. More exhaust than intake is not neutral. It is the failure mode.
Ridge vent vs box vent
Both are exhaust; the difference is distribution. A ridge vent leaves along the entire ridge. Box vents leave at points, and the bays between them stay comparatively still.
The arithmetic is unkind to box vents on a long ridge. GAF and Benjamin Obdyke both publish 18 square inches of NFA per linear foot on their rigid ridge vents, while the common square-top box vent from Master Flow, Lomanco or Marco is rated 50 square inches, full stop. Forty feet of ridge vent is therefore worth about fourteen box vents — and fourteen holes cut in the field is fourteen future leaks in a place nobody looks at.
Box vents still win in specific cases: a hip roof with barely any ridge, a roof chopped into short ridges, and dormers. Use them there. Do not scatter them over a roof that already has a working ridge vent.
Ridge vent and gable vents: the short circuit
This is the one that surprises people: two correctly installed products adding up to worse ventilation than either one alone.
A ridge vent pulls from wherever the resistance is lowest. A gable louver is a large opening a few feet below the ridge; a soffit vent is a small opening thirty or forty feet away, through insulation baffles. The ridge pulls from the gable, every time. The loop collapses into the top few feet of the attic, and the far end — usually the end over the bedrooms — moves almost nothing.
Most ridge vent manufacturers say plainly to block or remove gable vents when a ridge vent goes on. The one case where you pause: a house with no soffit intake at all, where those gable louvers are the only intake in the building. Closing them there makes things worse still. Solve the intake, then close them.
Attic fan vs ridge vent
A powered fan moves more air than a ridge vent. That is true and it is not the point.
A fan pulls from the easiest source, and on a typical house the easiest source is the conditioned space below: recessed light cans, the attic hatch, plumbing chases and the gaps at the top plates. So the fan runs on the hottest afternoon, depressurizes the attic, and drags out air you have already paid to cool. On a house with an atmospherically vented water heater or furnace, the same depressurization can pull at the appliance's draft, which moves this from a wasteful choice to a dangerous one. Solar-powered fans do the same thing; the electricity was never the objection.
Add a fan to an attic with a ridge vent and there is a second failure on top: the fan pulls air back down through the ridge vent, which is a very short loop that does nothing at all for the far bays.
If a fan appears to be necessary, the diagnosis is nearly always blocked intake and an unsealed ceiling plane. Seal the ceiling, clear the soffits, then look again. A whole-house fan is a different device doing a different job.
Who is allowed to do this work in Texas
Cutting a ridge slot means opening the roof deck, so it is roofing work rather than handyman work, whatever the size of the job.
Texas issues no roofing license of any kind, so a state number is not something any roofer here can show you. A contractor also may not act as a public adjuster on a property it may work on, even holding an adjuster license.
Ventilation also turns up in storm claims, because ridge caps and the vent under them are among the first things a wind event removes — and a stripped ridge vent leaves the slot open to the weather.
Texas gives you no right to cancel after a claim is denied, and that is worth saying plainly because so much roofing copy implies otherwise. What Texas does require is a specific notice in twelve-point boldface on any contract over a thousand dollars expected to be paid from insurance proceeds. Read that paragraph before you sign it.
Bottom line
Count the intake before buying any exhaust. Pick one exhaust type per attic space and stay with it. If there is a ridge, vent its whole length; if there is barely a ridge, box vents are the right answer rather than the cheap one. Block the gable vents once intake is sorted, and treat a powered fan as evidence that something upstream was never fixed.

On a roof with a long continuous ridge, yes, and it is not close. A ridge vent exhausts the full length at the highest point of the attic, which is where the hot air already is. Box vents exhaust at a few points and leave the bays between them relatively still.
Box vents earn their place on hip roofs with almost no ridge, on short broken ridges and on dormers. What you should not do is install both on the same attic space.
Can you have a ridge vent and gable vents at the same time?
You can, and it usually makes the ventilation worse. The ridge vent takes the path of least resistance, and a gable louver a few feet below it is a far easier draw than a soffit vent thirty feet away.
So the ridge pulls from the gable, the loop shortens to the top of the attic, and the far end of the attic gets very little movement. Most ridge vent manufacturers tell you to block the gable vents.
The exception is a house with no working soffit intake at all, where the gable vents are the only intake there is: fix the intake first, then close them.
Is an attic fan better than a ridge vent?
A powered attic fan moves more air, which is not the same as helping. A fan pulls whatever is easiest, and on a typical house the easiest air comes from inside the living space through recessed light cans, the attic hatch and gaps at the top plates, so you end up paying to cool air and then exhausting it.
Put a fan on the same attic as a ridge vent and it also pulls air backwards down through the ridge. If a fan seems necessary, the intake is usually the actual problem.
How much roof ventilation does the code require?
IRC section R806.2 sets it at 1/150 of the area of the space being vented, and permits a reduction to 1/300 only where a house satisfies both halves of the exception: a vapor retarder condition that bites in the coldest climate zones, and a placement condition governing how the area is divided between high and low vents. Both, not either.
Editions before 2015 read one or more, which is why so much vent literature still presents it as a choice. Note what the section does not do: it never tells you which vent to buy, and the area it fixes is net free area, so cutting a bigger hole earns you nothing.
Local amendments are common, so treat that as the baseline and the local code official as the authority.
